  German Learning Center

The children groups of the German Church have been serving the Charlotte community for the past four years. We are hosted by St. Marks Lutheran Church.

Our motto - like the German Church of Charlotte – is:

"International - Open - Ecumenical"

Goals

It is our goal to provide families in Charlotte with a location where they can experience and practice the German culture and language together. We support families that want to raise their children bilingual within the framework of a school environment while celebrating the holidays of the German church year.

We are not a preschool and set ourselves apart from other institutions because we focus mainly on the enhancement and development of the German language in fun and caring surroundings.

Learning

The speech development of each child is monitored individually. Learning occurs age-appropriately in a playful manner with music, singing, dancing, reading, story telling, crafts, puppet theater and excursions.

Celebrations following the German church year schedule are integrated into the curriculum. Parents are encouraged to participate in the learning process and celebrate the German holidays with us. Many parents notice a difference in the use of the German language of their children just after a few visits.

We constantly encourage the children to use the German language when talking to us or to each other. In our experience, children in these age groups are receptive to instruction for about two hours. Lessons start at 9:15 am and end at 11:45 am.

Groups

All groups are taught in the German language. We can of course speak English if need be. Please send a healthy snack with your child to be enjoyed during class time.

Krabbelgruppe

This parent and child group is for children from 6 months up to two years. Teacher, parents and children meet for songs, puppet shows, simple crafts, but also for discussions on child development, individual questions and problems. Parents should be active participants, support the teachers and motivate their child.

Miniclub

This group is for children between the ages of two to three years.

The children will follow their teachers to the classrooms. We sing, play, listen to stories and do art projects. Mothers who choose to stay with their child are should participate in the class, support the teacher and motivate their child. Mothers learning the language along with their children are especially encouraged to participate.

Kindergarten

This group is for children between the ages of three to five.

The children will follow the teachers to their classrooms.

We have a daily "Kinderkonferenz" where we talk about the prior week, afterwards we sing and play lots of interactive games. We enjoy crafts while listening to music. We also listen to stories. The children are encouraged to communicate and play with each other while using the German language.

Costs

The German Church is a relatively young congregation and the church is currently unable to support the German Learning Center financially, hence our expenses have to be covered by the tuition payments.

An allocation of the costs is listed in the prefix.

Based on the costs, the payments are as follows:

Krabbelgruppe (Mother-child)   $35/month

Miniclub                                        $50/month

Kindergarten                               $50/month
